Southwest Portland is rich in diversity

Neighborhoods in the Southwest section include West Portland Park, which is infused with cultural influences, Collins View, with two historic graveyards it houses, Hayhurst, which has a self-proclaimed “rural flavor,” and Homestead, home of Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU). Residents enjoy a high “walk score,” or rating of “walkability.”

Washington Park, located in Southwest Portland, is a popular recreation site. The Oregon Zoo,  the International Rose Test Garden, the Hoyt Arboretum, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Portland Japanese Garden, several hiking trails, and North America’s deepest transit station can all be found within Washington Park. The transit station has been called the third furthest underground  in the world, rivaled only by Park Pobedy station in Moscow and the Arsenalna station in Kiev, Ukraine.

Historic South Portland, also within Southwest Portland’s borders, was the site of Jewish and Italian communities in the early 1900s. Today, a 4.7-mile walk offers sight seers a glimpse of Ross Island, 19th century homes, and the parks and “quiet streets” of the historic neighborhood of South Portland. A committee of Southwest Neighborhoods Inc. called SWTrails Group maintains the many trails and biking/walking routes that are found in the area.
